Each year, over half of the children born in New York City are born into a life of poverty. These children are faced with overwhelming obstacles from their first moments; without the right resources, they will likely live their entire lives in poverty. Studies show that education is one of the most important ingredients in breaking the cycle of poverty. Consider these facts:

  • Nearly 33% of those lacking a high school diploma or GED are living below the federal poverty line.
  • 85% of children in New York City whose parents lack a high school degree live in low-income families.
  • 67% of children in New York City whose parents have a high school degree but no college education live in low-income households.
  • College graduates earn an average of $23,000 per year more than those with just a high school diploma.

In a city where only 61% of public school students pursue post-secondary education, it is apparent that alternative sources of education are crucial to the future success of the city's low-income students. These children need to be presented with the opportunity to attend high-quality schools that will prepare them to join the workforce and to obtain employment with competitive salaries, and The Endowment for Inner-City Education presents them with just such an opportunity.

With over two-thirds of students attending the Inner-City Schools living near or below the federal poverty level, the Inner-City Schools are addressing the same socioeconomic challenges in their student populations as the public schools. These schools are educating children at roughly half the cost of the New York City public schools, and yet, over 80% of students graduate from their original Inner-City High School in four years and 96% of those students pursue post-secondary education. These children will not be just another poverty statistic in New York City — they will be part of the city's bright and prosperous future.

The vast majority of these children would not be able to take advantage of a private school education without the help of a tuition scholarship. The Endowment for Inner-City Education was established with the belief that all children who desire a high-quality education should have access to one, and this year, the Endowment is making it possible for 8,400 students to receive a values-based, high-quality education.

The Inner-City Schools are making a very real difference in their students' lives and are providing the education and tools necessary for New York City's children to break the cycle of poverty. Our donors can rest assured that their contributions to The Endowment for Inner-City Education are having a profound impact, both on today's children and on New York City's future. We hope you will consider joining us in our mission of reaching thousands of students each year to provide a high-quality education to all who desire it.
